Mearsheimer’s International Relations theory ‘Offensive Realism’ is certainly the most echoed when it comes to the sole remaining superpower’s stance vis-à-vis an emergent China. According to it, great powers will ever strive to be the hegemon of the international system, thus a confrontation between Washington and Beijing will be somehow intrinsic. But does Mearsheimer’s exclusive trust on ‘hard power’ adequately reflect facets of Chinese power? The article discusses the importance of different concepts of power, incorporating Nye’s notion of ‘soft power.’ Instead, the author argues that soft power mandates hard power.
